Developing STEM in the East Midlands - The Race to the Top

In October 2007 Lord Sainsbury published his Review of the UK science and innovation system. The Review, commissioned by the Government, examines the role of science and innovation in ensuring the UK remains competitive in an increasingly globalised economy.

With guest speaker Professor John Holman, the East Midlands STEM Partnership Forum Event provides an opportunity to hear more about the Government’s plans for developing STEM skills and to assess how the East Midlands is performing.

Delegates will have the opportunity to network and meet other local and regional organisations, so we hope that you can join us.

The day will consist of two different workshops, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon.  Please select which workshops you would like to attend when registering for the event.

Morning Workshops

STEM Developments and National Priorities

Morning workshops are spilt into four areas of STEM provision – Continuing Professional Development, Enhancement and Enrichment, Careers and Progression, and Business Involvement.  Delegates will choose which workshop to attend.

The morning workshops will reflect on the national STEM priorities by Professor John Holman and discuss to what extent the East Midlands represents the national STEM situation.  In each of the workshops delegates will consider how relevant the national priorities are to the region’s STEM provision.  Strengths, weaknesses and opportunities will be identified for the four STEM areas to enable focused discussion in county and city groups in the afternoon.

Afternoon Workshops

Working Together Locally to Increase Impact

Afternoon workshops are spilt into five local groups – Derby and Derbyshire, Leicester and Leicestershire, Lincoln, Lincolnshire and Rutland, Northampton and Northamptonshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.  Delegates will choose to attend the relevant group based on their geographical remit.

The afternoon workshops are to provide a forum of discussion to stimulate increased partnership working in local areas.  Working in the local groups, delegates will focus on the STEM strengths, weaknesses and opportunities identified in the morning workshops and consider which areas their county and city needs to develop.  Groups will discuss how they will move STEM developments forward and what they need to implement plans.  Groups will decide how they will work together to move targets and actions forward, if necessary.
